When a buyer asks an AI assistant, does your company come up?

Gartner found that many B2B buyers already use generative AI to gather supplier information during a purchase [13]. They put questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Copilot about which factory is reliable, and shoppers can ask the same tools which brand is worth buying. Many Chinese companies are missing from those answers, or are described wrongly. We find out why, correct what AI systems read about you, and check the same buyer questions again at regular intervals, keeping dated screenshots.

What usually changes first
AI crawlers can reach your site, and assistants state your basic company facts more accurately

Signs this is happening to you

None of these show up in your ad dashboard. You only see them when you look on purpose.

  • You are not on the shortlist when someone asks for suppliers

You have exported for years, yet when you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for reliable suppliers in your category, it lists competitors or trading companies. Usually this is not a judgment about you. The assistant simply could not find a page it could cite, or the information about you on the web is thin and scattered.

  • The assistant describes your company wrongly

It gives your old factory address, lists a product line you dropped years ago, or confuses you with a similarly named company. OpenAI's own help page notes that ChatGPT search can return answers and sources that are wrong, missing pieces or out of date 9. When a wrong fact gets repeated, buyers arrive with the wrong picture, or do not arrive at all.

  • Your firewall or CDN is blocking AI crawlers

Many sites turn on aggressive bot blocking to stop attacks. OpenAI's crawler documentation tells site owners who want to show up in ChatGPT search to allow OAI-SearchBot and to let traffic from OpenAI's published IP ranges through their host or CDN 8. Perplexity gives the same advice for its crawler 10. Many companies have never checked which bots they turned away.

  • Your English site has nothing specific to quote

The home page says you are a professional manufacturer, and product pages show photos and model numbers but no materials, tolerances, certifications, minimum order quantities or lead times. An assistant answering a buyer's question needs a passage it can lift and cite. Vague pages rarely get picked.

  • Public information about you contradicts itself

Your English company name, founding year and factory size differ between your website, Alibaba.com, LinkedIn, trade show listings and industry directories. When an assistant pieces together an answer it sees the conflict, and then either leaves you out or gets it wrong.

  • Someone promised to guarantee AI recommendations

AI answers change with the user, location, conversation history and the day 9, so there is no fixed AI ranking anyone can guarantee. Google says AI Overviews ask for nothing beyond normal search eligibility, with no extra steps or special optimization 1. If someone promises placement, ask how they measure it and what evidence they keep.

How AI assistants pick suppliers and sources

Start with the buyer. Gartner surveyed nearly 650 B2B buyers between August and September 2025. On a recent purchase they used an average of seven information sources, and 45% said they used generative AI, mainly to gather information on vendors and products 13. In the same survey, 69% said they prefer to validate AI-generated insights with a sales rep, and 51% said they are more likely to run into misleading information from generative AI 13. AI is now part of procurement research, but buyers do not fully trust it. For a Chinese factory that means two jobs: get onto the shortlist the assistant produces, and make sure your website and public facts hold up when the buyer checks the AI's answer against them.

Assistants search before they answer

As of 2026, the major assistants look things up on the web before answering a question that needs current information, then compose the reply from the pages they find. Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode can split one question into many related searches (it calls this query fan-out), looking at different subtopics and sources before choosing the links that back up the answer 1. OpenAI's help page describes a similar loop: ChatGPT turns the user's question into its own search queries, sends them to search providers, reads what comes back and may search again with narrower terms 9. Whether an assistant mentions you depends heavily on whether those searches can find your pages.

That is why ordinary search visibility still matters. Google's documentation sets the same bar as ordinary search: a page has to be in Google's index and able to show with a snippet before it can be linked from AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google adds that nothing extra is required, no special AI file and no special schema 1. Google's May 2025 guidance adds the rest: unique content that helps people, a good page experience, pages Googlebot can crawl, structured data that matches what is visible on the page, and up-to-date Merchant Center and Business Profile information 2.

Each platform runs its own crawlers

OpenAI runs separate bots for separate jobs. OAI-SearchBot is the one that lets ChatGPT search find and link your site; block it and your pages drop out of those answers. GPTBot gathers material OpenAI may use for model training, and blocking it tells OpenAI to leave your content out of training. ChatGPT-User only visits when a person in ChatGPT asks it to open a page 8. Perplexity divides its crawlers along similar lines: PerplexityBot finds and links sites for Perplexity's answers and, according to Perplexity, is not used for training foundation models, while Perplexity-User covers visits a user triggers 10. On Google's side, Google-Extended is a separate token that decides whether your content may be used for Gemini training and grounding, and Google says it has no effect on whether or where you appear in Google Search 3. The distinction matters. Companies that block every AI bot to protect their content often give up the chance to be cited in AI search as well.

A robots.txt file only tells well-behaved crawlers which URLs they may visit. It is not a way to keep a page out of search, and not every crawler obeys it 4. In practice, what actually locks AI crawlers out is more often a firewall rule, a CDN bot filter, or a server that is slow or times out for visitors outside China.

How an assistant decides who you are

When an assistant describes a company, it draws on several sources: your website, your structured data, industry directories, social profiles, press coverage and buyer reviews. Google says Organization structured data on your home page helps it understand your name, URL, logo, address, contact points, and the other official profiles you list with sameAs 5. For products, Google distinguishes product snippets from merchant listings, and says providing both structured data and a Merchant Center feed gives you the widest eligibility 6. Google also states that it does not guarantee features using structured data will appear 5.

Google's quality guidance names trust as the most important part of E-E-A-T, and asks whether content shows who wrote it, what it is based on, and whether it adds original information 7. Original information is where a factory has a real advantage: actual production lines, inspection steps, certificate numbers and application examples are things a trading company or a content farm cannot write.

Why the answer changes from run to run

Ask the same question today and tomorrow, or from Shanghai and from Chicago, and you can get different answers. ChatGPT estimates a general location from the IP address and, when memory is on, may use what the user said earlier to rewrite the search 9. Google's fan-out sends different searches for different phrasings 1. For that reason our reports never quote a single position. The same list of buyer questions goes to the main assistants again at regular intervals, and what we follow is the share of answers that name you and the pages they link to, summarized in the monthly report.

How we work

Measure where you stand, fix the foundations, add content and outside evidence, then re-check the same questions on a schedule.

  1. 01

Step 1. Build the buyer question set and measure the baseline

Starting from the questions your sales staff hear most, we list the questions overseas buyers actually ask, such as who makes reliable stainless steel tanks, how two named suppliers compare, or whether a company holds CE certification. We put the same set to the main assistants, for example ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and record whether you are named, how you are described and which pages are cited, with dated screenshots.

OutputA buyer question set, dated screenshots from each assistant, and a count of how often you and key competitors are named

  2. 02

Step 2. Check that AI crawlers can get in

We review robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules to confirm that search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot can reach your site 810. Whether to allow training crawlers such as GPTBot and Google-Extended is your call, and we explain the effect of each choice 38. We also test load speed from outside China, server responses, and whether key content is hidden behind scripts a crawler cannot read.

OutputA crawler access checklist and the exact settings that need changing

  3. 03

Step 3. Make your company facts consistent and add structured data

We write one canonical fact sheet: full English name, founding year, factory address, main products, certifications, export markets and contact details. Then we check your website, Alibaba.com, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, trade show listings and industry directories, list every conflict and correct it. Your site gets Organization and Product structured data that matches what is on the page 56.

OutputA canonical fact sheet, a list of conflicts with a change log, and structured data in place

  4. 04

Step 4. Write content that assistants and buyers can quote

For the questions where you are missing, we write or rewrite pages: spec tables, selection guides, certification and testing pages, application examples and FAQs. Each passage should answer a question on its own, with numbers and standards stated plainly, so an assistant can lift it and a buyer can verify it. It is built from your factory's real information, which is what Google means by original and trustworthy 7.

OutputNew or rewritten English pages, each mapped to one or more buyer questions

  5. 05

Step 5. Fill gaps in third-party sources

Assistants also draw on information from third-party sites, not only on what your own website says. We look at which sites they cite most in your category, such as industry directories, association listings, review articles and trade media, and check whether you appear there and whether the details are right. The result is a list of recommended third-party sources to fill in, with the honest route onto each: a complete directory profile, an updated association listing, or reviews from genuine customers on public platforms. No paid reviews and no fake press.

OutputA list of recommended third-party sources (industry directories, association listings and similar), with the material each one needs

  6. 06

Step 6. Re-check regularly, report monthly

At regular intervals we put the same buyer questions to the main assistants, save dated screenshots, and track your share of mentions, the pages cited and whether the description is accurate, with the results gathered in the monthly report. Alongside that we read Google Search Console, where AI feature traffic is counted in the Web search type 1, the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools (a public preview as of 2026) 11, and AI referral visits and enquiries in your site analytics.

OutputA monthly AI visibility report: mention trend, screenshot evidence, AI referral visits and enquiries, and next month's priorities

How our approach differs

AI search is new and claims are loud. These are the choices we make on the questions that matter.

TopicThe usual approachHow Clickto does it
PromisesGuaranteed ChatGPT recommendations or a number one AI ranking. No promises about AI answers. Even OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed 9. We commit to the work, the measurement method and the evidence.

Questions

How is GEO related to SEO? Do I need both?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. Put simply: when an AI assistant answers a buyer, you want your company to appear, with accurate facts and a link to your own pages. It overlaps heavily with SEO, because assistants search before they answer, and Google says pages cited in AI Overviews must be indexed first 1. GEO adds attention to AI crawler access, consistent company facts across the web, passages that can be quoted on their own, outside evidence, and measurement with a fixed question set. If your SEO foundations are weak, we fix those first.

Can Clickto promise that ChatGPT will recommend us?

No, and nobody can honestly promise that. OpenAI says ChatGPT search weighs many factors when ordering results and that no site is promised a spot 9, and answers also shift with the user's location, memory and phrasing 9. The useful work sits elsewhere: correcting the pages, company facts and crawler settings that assistants draw from, asking the same buyer questions again at regular intervals, and showing you dated screenshots of what actually moved, or did not.

Should we block AI crawlers to protect our technical documents?

Treat them separately. OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are search crawlers, and blocking them keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers and Perplexity results 810. GPTBot (OpenAI) and Google-Extended (Google) relate to model training 38, and Google says blocking Google-Extended leaves your place in Google Search unchanged 3. Truly confidential drawings and pricing should not be on public pages anyway. The usual recommendation is to allow search crawlers and leave the training decision to you.

Does llms.txt help? Should we add one?

llms.txt is a community proposal first published in September 2024 to give AI tools a short, curated index of a site. It is still open for input and is not a formal standard 12. Google says you do not need any new file made for AI to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode 1. It is not a ranking factor. An accurate llms.txt takes little effort, so we may add one, but it is never the main work.

How will we know if it is working?

Three kinds of evidence. First, the fixed question set: your mention rate, cited pages and description accuracy, all with dated screenshots. Second, platform data: Google Search Console includes AI feature traffic in the Web search type without breaking it out 1, and the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools (a public preview as of 2026) shows how often Copilot and Bing AI summaries cite your pages 11. Third, AI referral visits and enquiries in your site analytics. Each source has gaps, so we read them together.

Why does the same question get different answers each time?

Because assistants search and compose afresh each time. ChatGPT rewrites the question into different searches, uses the user's approximate location and, with memory on, earlier preferences 9. Google's AI Overviews send several related searches around one question 1. A single screenshot proves little, so we track how the mention rate moves across many runs of the same questions.

We are B2B. Do industrial buyers really use AI to find suppliers?

Many do. In Gartner's survey of nearly 650 B2B buyers, 45% said they used generative AI on a recent purchase, mainly to gather information on vendors and products 13. The same survey found 69% prefer to validate AI-generated insights with a sales rep 13. So AI visibility works together with your website and your sales follow-up: the assistant gets you on the shortlist, and your site and team confirm it.

If we add structured data, will AI recommend us?

No. Structured data helps Google understand basic facts such as your name, URL, logo, address, contact points and other official profiles 5, but Google does not guarantee that features using it will appear 5, and the markup must match what is visible on the page 2. It is one foundation for being identified correctly, not a shortcut.
