The short answer

Need to test a market or win inquiries soon? Start with SEM. Stable product line and steady content? Run SEO alongside. Most exporters test with SEM and build with SEO.

1. The basic difference

SEO earns organic rankings. SEM pays for keywords, usually per click.

2. Cost

SEO costs content, technical work and people. SEM costs ad spend and management, and ads stop when spend stops.

3. Speed

SEM can start after ad review. SEO usually takes months.

4. When each fits

SEM suits market tests, launches and trade show periods. SEO suits specialised products with many long-tail terms.

5. Using both

Find converting terms with SEM, then build SEO pages for them.

Common mistakes

Judging clicks instead of inquiries, sending ads to the home page, and having no inquiry tracking.

AI search

AEO and GEO extend SEO. Clear facts and Q&A content serve both search and AI.
